Chapter one: the teenage world champion
Macklovitch grew up in Montreal (see our Montreal features), discovered turntablism at 13, and won the DMC World Championship at 15 (1997) — the youngest winner in the competition's history. The routines — the technical innovation, the showmanship — made him a turntablist legend before he could legally drive. The title launched a touring career that took him from Montreal's clubs to the world's stages.
Chapter two: the Kanye years
In 2004, Kanye West recruited A-Trak as his touring DJ — the pair's chemistry (see the Late Registration and Graduation tours) made A-Trak a star in the hip-hop world. The transition from battle DJ to working musician (the DJ as band member, the DJ as performer) set a template for the modern DJ's role. The Good Life performances — the scratching as composition — are legendary.
Chapter three: Fool's Gold and the future
In 2007, A-Trak founded Fool's Gold Records — the Brooklyn-based label that bridged indie rock and hip-hop (see our blog-house feature), launching Kid Cudi's Day 'n' Nite, Danny Brown's early singles, and the Run the Jewels project. His own productions (the Infinity +1 mixes, the Tuna Melt EP with Tommy Trash) brought the turntablist sensibility to EDM. The legacy: the DJ as A&R, the DJ as label head, the DJ as curator — the modern DJ career built on the battle foundation. The teenager who won the world championship built the future.
Why he matters
He matters because he bridged the eras — the battle DJ who became the star DJ, the turntablist who became the label head. The DMC title at 15 was just the beginning. The career that followed built the modern DJ's blueprint.
