Chapter one: the Jonquière beginnings (1982–1987)
Voivod formed in Jonquière in 1982 — four Quebec teenagers obsessed with metal and science fiction. The early records — War and Pain (1984), Rrröööaaarrr (1986), Killing Technology (1987) — established the sound: the thrash aggression, the Voivod's dimension (the band's sci-fi mythology), the guitar work of Piggy (Denis D'Amour) that pushed metal's harmonic boundaries. The band's early Canadian and international touring built the cult.
Chapter two: the progressive peak (1988–1993)
The late-80s and early-90s — Dimension Hatröss (1988), Nothingface (1989), Angel Rat (1991), The Outer Limits (1993) — found Voivod at their most ambitious: the concept albums fully realized, the production polished, the influences (prog, psychedelia, Voivod's sci-fi obsessions) fully integrated. Nothingface — the Pink Floyd cover ("Astronomy Domine"), the mind-bending compositions — became the cult classic; the band's influence on the progressive metal and thrash generations (see our metal feature) secured.
Chapter three: the endurance (1993–present)
The years since — lineup changes, Piggy's death in 2005, the subsequent albums (Katorz, Infini, Target Earth, The Wake, Synchro Anarchy) — have found Voivod enduring: the cult loyal, the sci-fi metal innovative, the Quebec roots (see our Quebec features) intact. The band remains the thinking person's metal standard: the dystopian concepts, the dissonant guitar, the four-decade catalog that keeps the cult satisfied and the influence spreading.
Why they matter
They matter because they invented thinking person's metal — the sci-fi concepts, the dissonant guitar, the thrash-as-prog — and influenced every progressive metal and thrash band that followed. The cult endures. The innovation continues. The sci-fi metal holds its ground.
