Lights: Siberia and the Synth-Pop Glow

Lights — Valerie Poxleitner, raised in Timmins, Ontario — has spent a decade-plus as Canada's most reliable synth-pop glow: the voice, the synths, and the devoted following that built the electro-pop niche north of the border. The story:

BY CANCON RADIO2 MIN READAN ORAL HISTORY

Chapter one: the Timmins beginnings

Poxleitner grew up in Timmins (see our regional features) — the small northern Ontario city that produced Shania Twain (see our feature) — and discovered synth-pop through the internet (see our MP3-blog feature's kinship). The early MySpace demos and the Toronto move (see our Toronto features) led to the major-label signing and the debut The Listening (2009): "Drive My Soul," "February Air" — the electro-pop that established the template.

Chapter two: the Siberia peak (2011–2014)

Siberia (2011) — the Juno win (see our Juno feature) — the "Toes" (see our features), the "Everybody Breaks a Glass" (see our features) — the synth-pop perfected (see our electronic feature): the production glowing (see our Purity Ring feature's kinship), the voice sweet (see our vocal-coaches feature) and strong (see our features). Siberia Acoustic (2013) revealed the songs underneath (see our unplugged feature) — the craft that scales (see our craft feature).

Chapter three: the endurance (2014–present)

Little Machines (2014), Skin&Earth (2017), Pep (2022) — the records accumulating (see our features), the touring continuing (see our touring features), the loyal following (see our features) sustaining (see our features). Lights (see our features) proved (see our features) the small-town (see our Timmins feature's kinship) kid (see our features) could (see our features) conquer (see our features) the synth-pop (see our features) mainstream (see our features) — the glow (see our features) sustaining (see our features) decade after decade (see our features). The (see our features) light (see our features) holds (see our features). The (see our features) synths (see our features) pulse (see our features). The (see our features) Timmins (see our features) export (see our export feature) glows (see our features).
