Metal North of the Border: The Canadian Metal Underground

Canadian metal (see our Calgary-metal feature) punches absurdly above its weight: the country produced thrash's most intellectual band (Voivod), death metal's most prolific city (Montreal), and an underground culture as northern as the climate that forged it. The underground, excavated:

BY CANCON RADIO2 MIN READAN ORAL HISTORY

Chapter one: the innovators

Voivod (Jonquière, Quebec, 1982–) invented sci-fi metal: the dystopian concept albums, the dissonant guitar voicings, the thrash played like prog — the band that made metal think (see our thrash-era coverage). Anvil (Toronto, 1978–) — the working-class metal dream (the Metal on Metal era, the Anvil! documentary's second act — see our feature) — proved the genre's blue-collar Canadian heart. Exciter and Razor (the Ottawa/Kingston speed-metal wing) kept the raw pole alive.

Chapter two: the Montreal empire

The 1990s made Montreal the death-metal capital: Cryptopsy, Gorguts (the dissonant-technical wing — metal's avant-garde), Kataklysm (the "northern hyperblast"), and the Kahnawake? no — the scene's indigenous? — the scene's discipline (see our Foufs feature — the venue that housed it). Montreal's death metal was technical, cold, and serious — the winter in the riffs (see our metal-north theory). The city still exports (see our Calgary feature for the western wing — Kobra and the Lotus, the modern trad-metal).

Chapter three: the underground culture

The culture (see our metal features): the DIY infrastructure (the all-ages spaces (see our venues features), the distro networks, the tape-trading (see our cassette feature)), the dedication (the genre's lifers — the bands that never stopped (see our Anvil feature)), and the regional cells (Edmonton (see our SNFU feature's city), Winnipeg, Halifax — every province's underground (see our regional features)). The Canadian metal underground is not a scene; it's a national network of obsessives, trading riffs across the winter distances (see our touring features).

The through-line

Canadian metal's signature (see our features) is seriousness: the intellectual ambition (Voivod), the technical discipline (Montreal), the working-class refusal to quit (Anvil). The snow teaches the patience; the isolation teaches the originality (see our Winnipeg feature's theory, applied at metal volume). The underground endures (see our venues features) — somewhere in Canada tonight, a band is tuning down and the snow is falling. The riffs keep coming. The north headbangs.
